Top Magic Keyboard trackpad tricks to navigate your iPad like a pro

Last Updated On May 11, 2023 by GeeksModo Staff

If you’ve recently gotten your hands on an iPad Magic Keyboard, you’re likely eager to start using its trackpad to its full potential. While the trackpad makes navigating your iPad Pro or iPad Air much more comfortable and seamless, it also comes with a variety of gesture tricks that will make your experience even more enhanced. This article will guide you through the ins and outs of these tricks, ensuring you get the most out of your new tool.

1. Basic Navigation

Before we dive into the more complex gestures, let’s get the basics down:

  • Point and Click: To select an item, simply move the cursor over it and click. It’s as simple as using a traditional mouse.
  • Two-Finger Scroll: Just like on a laptop, you can scroll up and down or side to side using two fingers on the trackpad.
  • Three-Finger Swipe: If you’re in an application, swiping up with three fingers will take you back to the Home Screen.

2. Multitasking Gestures

Multitasking on an iPad has never been easier:

  • App Expose: When you’re in an app, swipe up with three fingers and pause. This gesture will show you all the open windows for that app, making it easy to switch between tasks.
  • Switch Between Apps: Swipe left or right with three fingers to seamlessly switch between open apps.
  • Close App: Swipe up and off the trackpad with three fingers to close the app you’re currently in.

3. Text Editing Gestures

The Magic Keyboard also excels at text editing:

  • Cursor Movement: Simply move your finger around the trackpad to position the cursor where you want it.
  • Text Selection: Double-tap and hold on the trackpad to select a word. For sentence or paragraph selection, triple-tap and hold or quadruple-tap and hold respectively. Then, move your finger to adjust the selection.
  • Cut, Copy, Paste: Use a three-finger pinch to copy, a three-finger spread to paste, and a three-finger double pinch to cut text.

4. Slide Over and Split View

Making use of Slide Over and Split View can significantly enhance your productivity:

  • Slide Over: Swipe up from the bottom of the trackpad with one finger and pause. Then, drag the app you want to the left or right edge of the screen.
  • Split View: Drag a second app to the edge of the screen while in Slide Over mode. You can adjust the size of each app by dragging the divider.

5. Access App Dock, Control Center, and Notification Center

  • App Dock: To bring up the App Dock, swipe up from the bottom edge of the trackpad with one finger and pause.
  • Control Center: Move the cursor to the top right of the screen and click.
  • Notification Center: Move the cursor to the top left of the screen and click.

6. Customizing Trackpad Settings

You can also customize the trackpad settings to suit your preferences:

  • Trackpad Speed: Go to Settings > General > Trackpad. Here, you can adjust the tracking speed to make the cursor move faster or slower.
  • Tap to Click: You can also enable "Tap to Click" in the same settings menu. This allows you to tap the trackpad to click instead of pressing it.

By mastering these tricks, you’ll be able to navigate your iPad like a pro, boosting your productivity and making your experience all the more enjoyable. Remember, practice makes perfect, so don’t be afraid to play around with these gestures until they become second nature. Happy swiping!
