1. Close and Re-open Calendar

  • On iPhone XR and later: Just swipe up from the Home bar > hold along the middle of the screen to bring up the App Switcher. Next, swipe Calendar up and off the top of the screen. You’ll know Calendar is closed when it no longer appears in the app switcher.
  • On iPhone SE (second generation) and newer: Double-press the Home button to bring up the app switcher and then swipe Calendar up and off the top of the screen. You’ll know Calendar is closed when it no longer appears in the app switcher.

2. Restart Your iPhone

Restarting your iPhone is often the quickest fix for a malfunctioning app. This step can resolve minor software glitches and get your Calendar app working again.

To restart iPhones with Face ID: Press and hold the side button and either volume button until “slide to power off” shows up on the screen. Drag the white and red power icon from left to right to turn off your iPhone.

Wait about 20 seconds, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo shows up on the screen. Your iPhone will turn on again shortly after.

To restart iPhones without Face ID: Press and hold the power button until “slide to power off” shows up on the screen. Swipe the power icon from left to right to shut down your iPhone.

Wait about 20 seconds to allow your iPhone to shut down completely. Then, press and hold the power button until the Apple logo appears on the screen. When the Apple logo appears, let go of the power button and let your iPhone turn on again.

3. Update The Calendar App

It’s possible Calendar isn’t working on your iPhone because you’re using an outdated version of the app. App updates often fix bugs and sometimes introduce new features. Since Calendar is a native iOS app, it can only be updated by an iOS update.

Start the Settings app on your iPhone and go to General > Software Update. Tap Download and Install or Install Now if an iOS update is available.

4. Turn iCloud off and on

From our experiences, we know that sometimes an iCloud glitch may cause this issue. You may be experiencing this. This is an easy fix. The steps below describe turning iCloud off and on for Calendars. You will not lose any data. Here is how:

  1. Start the Settings app on your iPhone and tap on your name at the top of the screen.
  2. Go to iCloud.
  3. Under the Apps Using iCloud section, tap See All.
  4. Find Calendars and toggle off the iCloud switch for Calendars.
  5. When you turn it off, you will be asked what you want to do with the iCloud data, and a popup will appear with two options: Keep on My iPhone or Delete from My iPhone.
  6. Choose the Keep option. Do not choose the Delete option (of course, unless you want to delete). The Keep option will save the data on your iPhone.
  7. Wait for the process to complete. It may take up to a minute.
  8. Now, toggle on the switch again. Since we selected the Keep option, you will be asked what you want to do with the saved iCloud data. A popup saying “Existing Local Calendars” will ask if you want to Merge. Choose Merge to avoid losing Calendar data.
  9. Now close Settings, open Calendar, and check if it’s working properly.

Occasionally, files within the Calendar app on iPhone can become corrupted, causing the app to stop working. Deleting and reinstalling the Calendar app can sometimes fix a software issue like a corrupted file and give the app a fresh start.

Press and hold on Calendar app on the Home screen of your iPhone until a quick menu opens. Tap Remove App > Delete App > Delete to uninstall Calendar on your iPhone.

When you’re ready to reinstall Calendar, open the App Store. Tap the Search tab in the lower right-hand corner of the screen, then type “Calendar” into the search box.
