How to Use the Personal Hotspot Feature on Your iPhone

Updated On March 11, 2023 by Dave Johnson

The Personal Hotspot feature on your iPhone is a great way to share your mobile data with other devices, such as laptops, tablets, or other smartphones, via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB cable. This feature can be very useful when you are traveling, working remotely, or have limited access to Wi-Fi.

In this article, we will explain how to use the Personal Hotspot feature on your iPhone, step-by-step.

What is personal hotspot?

Personal Hotspot is a feature on iPhone that allows you to share your mobile data connection with other devices, such as laptops, tablets, or other smartphones, via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB cable. Essentially, it turns your iPhone into a mobile hotspot or router that other devices can connect to in order to access the internet.

How to Use Personal Hotspot on an iPhone

Step 1: Check your carrier plan

Before using the Personal Hotspot feature on your iPhone, make sure that your carrier plan allows tethering or mobile hotspot usage. Depending on your plan, you may have a limited amount of data that you can use for hotspot, or you may need to pay an extra fee. You can check your plan by contacting your carrier or by checking your account settings on their website.

Step 2: Enable Cellular/Mobile Data on iPhone

Turn on Cellular/Mobile data on your iPhone via the Control Center menu by swiping down from the top-right.

Step 3: Enable Personal Hotspot

To enable Personal Hotspot on your iPhone, go to Settings > Personal Hotspot. If you are using an older version of iOS, you may find the Personal Hotspot option under Settings > Cellular or Mobile.

Once you are in the Personal Hotspot settings, toggle on the Allow Others To Join switch to turn on the feature. You can also set a Wi-Fi password by tapping on Wi-Fi Password.

Step 4: Connect other devices

Once the Personal Hotspot is enabled, you can connect other devices to it via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB cable. Here’s how:

  • Wi-Fi: On the device you want to connect, go to Wi-Fi settings and look for the name of your iPhone’s Personal Hotspot network. Enter the Wi-Fi password you set up in the previous step, and you should be connected.
  • Bluetooth: On the device you want to connect, go to Bluetooth settings and turn on Bluetooth. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and toggle on the switch. Your other device should appear in the list of available devices. Tap on it to pair them, and you should be connected.
  • USB cable: Connect your iPhone to the other device via a Lightning-to-USB cable. Once the devices are connected, your other device should automatically recognize your iPhone as a mobile hotspot.

Step 5: Use Personal Hotspot

Once your other devices are connected to your iPhone’s Personal Hotspot, you can start using the internet on those devices. Keep in mind that using Personal Hotspot will consume your mobile data, so make sure to monitor your data usage and turn off the feature when you’re not using it.

Step 5: Turn off Personal Hotspot

When you’re finished using Personal Hotspot, it’s important to turn it off to avoid unnecessary data usage and to save battery life. To turn off Personal Hotspot on your iPhone, simply go to Settings > Personal Hotspot and toggle off the switch next to Allow Others to Join.

How Much Data Does Personal Hotspot Use?

The amount of data used by Personal Hotspot on your iPhone depends on a few factors, such as the number of devices connected, the type of activities being performed on those devices, and the amount of time the hotspot is used.

For example, activities that require a lot of data, such as streaming high-definition video, will use more data than activities that require less data, such as browsing the web or checking emails.

To give you an idea, here’s an estimate of how much data some common activities use:

  • Browsing the web: 60 MB per hour
  • Streaming music: 150 MB per hour
  • Streaming standard-definition video: 700 MB per hour
  • Streaming high-definition video: 1.5 GB per hour

Keep in mind that these estimates are based on average data usage and can vary depending on the specific activity and device being used.

It’s important to monitor your data usage when using Personal Hotspot to avoid exceeding your data plan and incurring additional charges. You can check your data usage by going to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Usage, where you can see how much data you’ve used during the current period and reset your usage statistics.

Is It Safe to Use Personal Hotspot on iPhone?

Yes, it is generally safe to use the Personal Hotspot feature on your iPhone. Apple has designed this feature to provide a secure and encrypted connection between your iPhone and the devices that connect to it.

The Personal Hotspot feature uses WPA2 encryption to protect your Wi-Fi network and prevent unauthorized access. You can also set a Wi-Fi password to further secure your hotspot network.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that using the Personal Hotspot feature will consume your mobile data, which could result in additional charges if you go over your data limit. To avoid unnecessary data usage, you should only use the Personal Hotspot feature when you need to share your internet connection with other devices, and turn it off when you’re not using it.

Additionally, you should make sure that your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS, which includes security updates and bug fixes that can help protect your device and personal information.

Access the Internet Anywhere With Your iPhone

The Personal Hotspot feature on iPhone can be a convenient way to share your mobile data with other devices, especially when you’re on the go or don’t have access to Wi-Fi. By following these steps, you can easily enable, connect, and use Personal Hotspot on your iPhone. However, it’s important to keep in mind your carrier plan and monitor your data usage to avoid additional charges.
