Forgot your PC password? Here’s what to do

Last Updated On July 28, 2022 by GeeksModo Staff

So you’ve lost your computer password, can’t remember it and desperately need to gain access to all of your documents?

If you lost or forgot laptop password, there are ways to retrieve it. You can achieve this whether you are running Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10.

If you’ve lost or forgot laptop password there are a number of options you can try to access your computer. But with so many Windows operating systems now in use, methods to gain access to your computer can vary. That said, here are two methods that you can try.

Accessing the computer as ‘administrator’

On Windows, there is a hidden account named Administrator. Most of the time, this account has no password set. That means that you can start your computer with this account, open the Control Panel to delete or change the password of any users and fix your problem.

You can do this in a few simple steps:

Step 1: Boot your computer and immediately press on the F8 key several times until the boot menu appears.

Step 2: Select Safe Mode using the arro keys and hit Enter.

Step 3: Click on the Start menu located at the bottom left corner, head to the Control Panel, then in User Accounts you can change any user passwords easily.

The above method may or may not work depending on which operating system you are running.

forgot laptop password? Use third-party tool

Thankfully, if you forgot laptop password and the above method did not work, there are password reset tools available to help you recover the account.

Based on the experience of users, PassFab 4WinKey is arguably the best Windows password recovery tool available today. Please note, this tool should only be used to gain access to your own files, never for the purpose of cracking somebody else’s password.

Without further ado, here is how to reset forgotten windows password using PassFab 4WinKey:

Step 1: Download and install PassFab 4WinKey. Now, Launch the software on your Windows computer. Get an empty USB flash drive and plug it to your computer.

Step 2: Next, choose the “CD/DVD Drive” as your recovery device and click the “Burn” button. Click “OK” once the process is complete. Now, go ahead and eject the flash drive.

Step 3: Now, connect the USB drive with your locked Windows computer in order to start the unlock process. Click “F12” (Boot Menu) before clicking the USB flash drive followed by “Enter” key.

Step 4: Next, go ahead and select the operating system, so click “Windows 10” here followed by the “Next” select operating system

Step 5: Next on, mention the account type here from Admin/guest/Microsoft. Check the account name next to it and then hit the “Next” button.

Step 6: Finally, press the “Reboot” after your Windows password has been removed.
