why does siri say “something went wrong, please try again?”

There could be many reasons why Siri says “something went wrong, please try again.” From what I can tell based on my personal experience, it’s the occasional software glitches that cause the problem. Besides, Apple’s servers might be having problems, or your internet connection may be down. Fortunately, most problems are minor and can be fixed within a few minutes without much technical knowledge. Just follow the steps below to get Siri back up and running. One of them should solve the problem.

How to Fix Siri says something went wrong, Please Try Again

1. Toggle Wi-Fi and Airplane mode

If Siri says something went wrong, toggling the Wi-Fi connection is known to fix the problem in many cases. Start with the Wi-Fi. You can do this by following the steps below:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go into Wi-Fi.
  3. Turn the Wi-Fi off.
  4. Wait for a couple of seconds and then turn it back on.

After this, toggle Airplane mode. You can do this by followingthe steps below:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Airplane mode and enable it.
  3. Wait for a couple of seconds and then turn it off.

2. Restart your iPhone

Smartphones sometimes glitch out, including iPhones. If Siri keeps saying something went wrong after trying the fixes above, there’s a chance that rebooting your device will force some necessary software process to kick into gear.

You can reboot your iPhone by following the steps below:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go into General.
  3. Tap Shut Down.
  4. Once your iPhone is completely powered off, press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.

If Siri says something went wrong even after this, continue on—your issue is more complex than a basic reboot.

3. Disable VPN on your iPhone

While a VPN won’t always prevent Siri from working, it can potentially cause issues. Because VPN services reroute your network connections, using one could prevent Siri from accessing info properly.

Unless you must use a VPN for some reason, try disabling any VPN apps while you use Siri to see if that helps.

You can disable VPN by following the steps below:

  1. Go to settings.
  2. Disable the VPN toggle.

If you are not able to disable it then launch the VPN app to disable VPN temporarily to figure out if it resolves the Siri problem on your iPhone.

4. Check Siri servers

If Siri keeps saying something went wrong, it’s wise to check whether Siri servers are working fine or if they are experiencing any issues currently. To do this, visit Apple’s System Status website. Now look for a green dot next to Siri. If you see it, it means the servers are up and running, otherwise, you should wait until the problem is fixed from Apple’s end.

5. Make sure the date and time are properly set

If you are still scratching your head wondering “why does Siri say something went wrong,” make sure that the date and time on your phone are set correctly for your time zone. The best option to go for is “Set automatically”. Follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select Date & Time .
  4. Tap on Set Automatically.

6. Reboot your router

I know you’ve heard this over and over again, but it’s a method that usually works. It is possible that your router is running out of memory or using up a lot of CPU cycles, and a restart allows things to go back to normal. To reboot a router, turn it off for a minute or unplug it from the wall for a minute. Based on your router, it may take a few minutes for the Wi-Fi network to be visible again on your iPhone.

7. Reset the network settings

At this point, if you’ve proceeded through all these steps and still Siri says something went wrong, please try again, there’s not much you can do other than reset your network settings. Doing so will flush all saved Wi-Fi networks, mobile data settings, and paired Bluetooth devices. Basically, you’re starting over when it comes to network connectivity, but no data on your phone will be erased. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select Transfer or reset iPhone.
  4. Select Reset.
  5. Tap reset network settings.

8. Check Your ISP’s Status

At this point, if Siri keeps saying something went wrong, it’s worth checking if your internet service provider (ISP) is having an issue. Though this is rare, it could explain why Siri says something went wrong, please try again.

If you are able to connect to internet in some way, check if Comcast, Verizon, or whoever provides service in your area has reported outages. DownDetector is a great site for this. A quick Google or Twitter search can reveal whether others are having a problem, too.
