17. Listen with Spatial audio

Next in our Apple TV tips and tricks, I want to highlight using spatial audio with head tracking. This is the best at-home surround experience that doesn’t involve a massively elaborate home entertainment system. To really take advantage, you’ll want AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro 2, newer Beats Headphones, or my favorite for this, the AirPods Max.

  1. Make sure that you’re wearing your AirPods Pro (1st or 2nd generation), AirPods Max, AirPods (3rd generation), or Beats Fit Pro, and that they’re connected to your Apple TV.
  2. Go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth. Or you can press and hold the Home button on your Siri Remote while you’re playing audiovisual content in a supported app.
  3. Choose your AirPods or Beats from the list.
  4. Choose Spatial Audio while you’re playing multichannel content, or Spatialize Stereo while you’re playing two-channel stereo content. But to get the best experience, I suggest using head tracking — this changes the soundstage depending on where you turn your head, so if you turn your head to the left as you are facing your TV, then the audio will seem to come from the TV. But if you don’t want this, you can turn it off. Either way, to access this, open Settings > Accessibility > AirPods, then toggle Center audio on TV on or off.

18. Use Your iPhone or iPad as an Apple TV Remote

Next, let’s talk about the Apple Remote app – a lifesaver when your Apple TV remote is playing hide and seek. If you haven’t used it yet, you’re missing out. The app turns your iPhone or iPad into a full-fledged remote control with a touchpad, playback controls, and even a keyboard for easy text input.

So, how do you turn your iPhone or iPad into a handy Apple TV remote? Let’s break it down:

If your iPhone or iPad is running version 13 of the operating system or later, Apple TV Remote should automatically be added to the Control Center. If you’re using an older version — or if you don’t see it there for any reason — you’ll need to start by adding it.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, start the **Settings **app.
  2. Tap Control Center. Check to see if Apple TV Remote is in the Included Controls section of the page. If not, scroll down and find the Apple TV Remote in More Controls. Tap the plus symbol to the left of the remote to add it to Included Controls.
  3. Open the Control Center by swiping down from the top right of the screen. (If you are using iOS 11 or older, open the Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.)
  4. Tap the Apple TV Remote button from the collection of buttons at the bottom of the screen.
  5. If this is your first time using the remote, you will be asked to select your Apple TV from the list and then enter a four-digit code that’s displayed on the Apple TV screen.
  6. Enter this code on your iPhone or iPad, and voilà! Your device is now a remote.

19. Rename your Apple TV

You can rename your Apple TV. Yeah – who knew? This can come in handy if you have more than one Apple TV in your house and want to know at all times which one is which on your network. To name your Apple TV, head over to Settings -> General -> About -> Name. At that point, you can choose from Apple’s default list of names.

Apple lets you name your Apple TV based on the room it might be in, such as the living room, but if you want to get even more creative, you can designate a custom name. We named ours Dave. Hi, Dave!

20. Reduce Loud Sounds for Night-time Viewing

Do action-packed films with sudden loud noises disturb your peace, especially during late-night binge sessions? Fear not, as Apple TV has a solution. ‘Reduce Loud Sounds’ is a fantastic feature that keeps the volume at a consistent level, so sudden loud noises won’t jolt you out of your seat.

Navigate to ‘Settings’ -> ‘Video and Audio’ -> ‘Reduce Loud Sounds’ and toggle the switch on. Now, you can enjoy your movies without disturbing your slumbering family members or neighbors.
