With your personal information saved on iPhone, you can automatically fill in contact information, user names, and passwords. You can also automatically fill in payment information.

Saving your details on your iPhone speeds up filling in online forms, and you can even use AutoFill to enter another person’s information from your contact list, like a friend’s address when you ship a gift. You set up AutoFill first, and you can fill in your passwords the same way.

Here’s how to fill in personal information in Safari on iPhone.

Set up AutoFill

To speed up filling in online forms, you can save your personal information on your iPhone.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Apps, then tap Safari.
  3. Tap AutoFill, then turn on Use Contact Info.
  4. Tap My Info, then choose your contact card.

The contact information from that card is entered when you tap AutoFill on webpages in Safari.

Fill in your contact information automatically

AutoFill can quickly add your personal information to online forms.

  1. Open the Safari app on your iPhone.
  2. In a form on a website that supports AutoFill, tap a blank field.
  3. Tap AutoFill Contact above the keyboard, then select a contact.
  4. Tap any field to make changes.

Note: AutoFill also works with another person’s information from your contact list. Say you’re buying a gift and shipping it to a friend: AutoFill can enter their address for you. Tap AutoFill Contact, tap Other Contact, and then choose their contact card.

Fill in your passwords automatically

For many of your accounts, iPhone can create and save strong passwords when you sign up for services on websites and in apps. Important: Never enter a password on a site with a “Not Secure” warning.

Turn off AutoFill

Turning off AutoFill for your contact information and for passwords is helpful when you don’t want your contact information to be readily available, such as if you share a device with others.

  • Turn off AutoFill for your contact information: Go to Settings > Apps > Safari > AutoFill, then turn off Use Contact Info.
  • Turn off AutoFill for passwords: Go to Settings > General > AutoFill & Passwords, then turn off AutoFill Passwords.

You can change the password you use to sign in to a website or app on your iPhone. In the Passwords app, you can even upgrade to Sign in with Apple. That only works if the website or app allows it, though, and if you aren’t given the upgrade option, many accounts let iPhone automatically create a strong password.

The Passwords app showing details for an account, including User Name, Password, and Website.

  1. Start the Passwords app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap All. Then locate the account for the website or app.
  3. Tap the account.
  4. Tap Edit, tap Change Password, and change your password on the website or in the app.

If the website or app allows you to upgrade to Sign in with Apple, you can take advantage of the security and convenience of that feature. If you aren’t given the upgrade option when you change your password, many accounts allow iPhone to automatically create a strong password that you don’t have to remember. Note: If you get a warning on your iPhone about a password for a website or app that’s no longer available, you can remove its account from your iPhone and iCloud Keychain. Go to the Passwords app on your iPhone, tap All, swipe left on the account, then tap Delete.

You can see the previous versions of a password for a website or app, along with the dates they were changed. You can also clear the history of changes. The history of changes also shows whether you shared the password with anyone using AirDrop, or if you shared or unshared it with a shared password group. You’ll find it in the Passwords app, under each website or app account in your list.

  1. Start the Passwords app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap All.
  3. Locate and tap the website or app account.
  4. Tap View History.

The history of changes also shows if you shared the password with anyone using AirDrop, and if you shared or unshared the password with a shared password group. To show the password, tap the Password button. To remove the list of changes, tap Clear, then tap Clear to confirm.

Review connection security details to determine whether a website is encrypted. Encrypted websites mask the data you exchange with them, so that only you and they can see it.

It’s important to use encrypted websites to prevent anyone from “eavesdropping” on you, and Safari on iPhone shows you the connection security details for any website you visit.

  1. Start the Safari app on your iPhone.
  2. Go to the website and tap the Page Menu button on the left side of the search field. Then tap Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap Connection Security Details.

  1. Start the Safari app on your iPhone.
  2. Go to the PDF.

You can create and save passkeys to replace the passwords you use to sign in to supported websites and apps on your iPhone. Passkeys are more secure than passwords, because they’re uniquely generated for every account by your own device and are less vulnerable to phishing.

And they work on all your devices where you’re signed in to the same Apple Account. Websites and apps can even create passkeys for your account automatically, so you can use them the next time you sign in on your iPhone. Like passwords, passkeys are encrypted and stored in your iCloud Keychain, where they aren’t visible to anyone, including Apple. Before you use passkeys, you need iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication turned on.

Note: Passkeys only work with iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication turned on.

Create and save a passkey using your iPhone

You can create and save passkeys for websites and apps that support them. Note: The instructions for creating and saving a passkey can vary depending on the app, website, or browser, but they typically consist of steps similar to the ones below.

  1. Go to the sign-in screen for a supported website or app on your iPhone, and do one of the following:
    • If you’re setting up a new account: Tap the button or link for setting up new accounts, then follow the onscreen instructions.
    • If you already have an existing account: Sign in with your account name and password and then go to the account settings or management screen.
  2. When you see the option to save a passkey for the account, tap Continue.

Your passkey is saved. Note: If you don’t see a passkey option, it means the website or app doesn’t currently support passkeys. The passkeys you create are stored on your iPhone in the Passwords app. You can have a passkey and password for the same website or app, and find them both under the same account in the Passwords app. You can also save a passkey to a hardware security key. Tap “Other options,” “Save on another device,” or similar (if available), then follow the onscreen instructions for saving a passkey.

Use a passkey to sign in to a website or app on your iPhone

After you create and save a passkey for a website or app, you can use the passkey whenever you sign in. Note: The instructions for signing in with a passkey can vary depending on the app, website, or browser, but they typically consist of steps similar to the ones below.

  1. Go to a website or app on your iPhone, and tap the account name field on the sign-in screen.
  2. Tap the suggested account name that appears at the bottom of the screen or near the top of the keyboard. If the account name doesn’t appear, or you want to use a different one, enter it.
  3. Use Face ID or Touch ID to complete sign in. If you didn’t set up Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone, enter your device passcode (the code you use to unlock your iPhone).

The passkey you saved completes the sign-in automatically.

Use a passkey saved on your iPhone to sign in on another device

If you’re using a device not associated with your Apple Account (such as a computer at a public library, an internet cafe, or a friend’s house) and you have your iPhone with you, you can sign in to websites or apps on that device using the passkeys you created for them. Note: The instructions for using a passkey on another device can vary depending on the app, website, or browser, but they typically consist of steps similar to the ones below.

  1. On the other device, go to the website or app and enter your user name in the account name field on the sign-in screen.
  2. Select “Other options,” “Passkey from nearby device,” or similar and then follow the onscreen instructions to display a QR code on the screen.
  3. Use your iPhone camera to scan the QR code.

The passkey that’s saved to iCloud Keychain completes the sign-in automatically.

Create a passkey on a device that’s not your own

If you have your iPhone with you, you can create a passkey while using a device not associated with your Apple Account (such as a computer at a public library, an internet cafe, or a friend’s house) and save it to iCloud Keychain instead of to the device you’re using to create the passkey. Note: The instructions for creating a passkey can vary depending on the app, website, or browser, but they typically consist of steps similar to the ones below.

  1. On the other device, go to the sign-in page for a supported website or app. Do one of the following:
    • If you’re setting up a new account: Tap the button or link for setting up new accounts. Enter a new username.
    • If you already have an account: Sign in with your account name and password and then go to the account settings or management screen.
  2. When you see the option to save a passkey for the account, select “Other options,” “Save on another device,” or similar (instead of Continue). Note: If you don’t see a passkey option, it means the website or app doesn’t currently support passkeys.
  3. Select Save a passkey on a device with a camera, or similar and then follow the onscreen instructions to display a QR code on the screen.
  4. Use your iPhone camera to scan the QR code.

The passkey is saved to your iPhone and iCloud Keychain.

Change a passkey

You might need to create a new passkey to replace the existing one (if, for example, you previously shared it with someone to whom you no longer want to give access). To change a passkey, follow the steps for an existing account in Create and save a passkey or Create a passkey on a device that’s not your own.

Delete a passkey

  1. Start the Passwords app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Passkeys and then tap the account for the passkey you want to delete.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. Tap Delete and tap Delete Passkey to confirm.

If you delete a passkey, you can create a new one at any time.
