Voice Memos

You can duplicate a recording in the Voice Memos app on your iPad, which is useful when you need another copy of it. You can make changes to the copy, save it, and give it a new name.

The duplicate shows up right below the original version in the list of recordings, with “copy” added to its name. You can change that name to a new one, and share a recording, too.

  1. Go to the Voice Memos app on your iPad.
  2. In the list of recordings, tap a recording, tap the Share button above the waveform, and tap Duplicate.

The duplicate appears right below the original version in the list and has “copy” added to its name. To change the name, tap it, then type a new one.

Filter out background sounds

Your Mono and Stereo recordings can include background sounds or leave them out.

  1. Open the Voice Memos app on your iPad.
  2. Open Control Center.
  3. Tap Voice Memos at the top of Control Center.
  4. To filter out background sounds and record only your voice, select Voice Isolation.

Record stereo or mono

Which recording mode you select determines how the recording sounds on playback.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPad.
  2. Tap Apps and tap Voice Memos.
  3. Tap Recording Mode, then choose one of the following:

    • Mono: Audio playback is the same in both ears.
    • Stereo: Separates audio playback between the left and right ears.

When Stereo is selected, Voice Memos records using multiple microphones on your iPad and with right and left audio channels. If you listen to a Stereo recording through headphones, you hear different sounds from different microphones; however, the waveform display still looks the same.

Use the advanced recording features

Pausing and resuming as you record lets you make a recording in parts.

  1. Open the Voice Memos app on your iPad.
  2. Tap the Record button to begin a recording.

To adjust the recording level, move the microphone closer to or farther away from what you’re recording.

To see more details while you’re recording, swipe up from the top of the waveform.

  3. Tap the Pause button to stop recording; tap Resume to continue.
  4. To review your recording, tap the Play button.

To change where playback begins, drag the playhead right or left across the small waveform at the bottom of the screen before you tap the Play button.

  5. To save the recording, tap Done.

Your recording is saved with the name New Recording or the name of your location, if Location Services is turned on in Settings > Privacy & Security. To change the name, tap the recording, then tap the name and type a new one.

To fine-tune your recording, read our article, Edit or delete a recording.

Mute the start and stop tones

Turning on Silent mode mutes the start and stop tones.

Open Control Center, then tap the Silent Mode Off button to turn on Silent mode.

Use another app while recording

You’re free to use another app while you’re recording, as long as it doesn’t play audio on your iPad.

  1. Open the Voice Memos app on your iPad.
  2. Tap the Record button to begin recording.
  3. While recording, you can open the Home Screen and open another app.

If the other app starts playing audio, Voice Memos stops recording.

  4. To return to Voice Memos, tap the orange icon at the top of the screen.

With Voice Memos turned on in iCloud settings or preferences, iCloud saves your recording, and it shows up automatically on any iPhone, iPad, or Mac where you’re signed in to the same Apple Account.

Unless you turn on Stereo Recording in Settings, recordings using the built-in microphone are in Mono. To record in Stereo, you can also connect an external stereo microphone or audio interface that works with iPad. Look for the Apple “Made for iPad” or “Works with iPad” logo on the accessory.

You can play audio you recorded on your iPad using the playback controls, and adjust the playback options to change playback speed, reduce background noise, and fill in silences.

You can change the playback speed, turn on Studio Sound, enhance a recording, and skip over gaps while it plays. On supported models, Studio Sound adjusts the level of background sound and reverb, and each setting stays with the recording you chose it for.

Note: Changing these settings won’t affect the recording itself in any way. Any setting you choose for a recording stays with that recording only, and it’s applied each time you play the recording, not to other recordings.

Control Description

The Pause button. Pause
The Rewind Fifteen Seconds button. Skip backward 15 seconds
The Fast Forward Fifteen Seconds button. Skip forward 15 seconds

  1. Start the Voice Memos app on your iPad.

  3. Turn on Studio Sound. Drag the slider to increase or decrease the effect.

On iPhone 16 Pro or later (except iPhone 16e), you can create a layered recording by adding a vocal layer on top of an instrumental recording. On an iPad with iPadOS 18.2 or later, where you’re signed in to the same Apple Account, you can see any layered recordings you created on a supported iPhone.

You can mix the two layers, or separate them to edit them or play them separately, and the two layers then appear as separate recordings. You can even import layered recordings into Logic Pro.

Note: Layered recordings use the QTA (QuickTime Audio) format, which means devices that have iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, macOS 15.1, or earlier can’t show them. Once you separate the layers, each one is in .m4a format and appears on devices running iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, macOS 15.1, or earlier.

Mix the layers

You can mix a layered recording’s two layers.

  1. Go to the Voice Memos app on your iPad.
  2. Tap the layered recording you want to mix.
  3. Tap the Options button.
  4. Drag the Layer Mix slider to mix the layers.

Separate the layers

Separating the two layers of a layered recording on your iPad means you can edit or play them separately.

  1. Open the Voice Memos app on your iPad.
  2. In the list of recordings, touch and hold the layered recording you want to separate and tap Separate Layers.

The two layers appear as separate recordings in the list. You can select them, edit them, and play them separately.

Note: The separated layers are in .m4a format and will appear on devices with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, macOS 15.1, or earlier.

Import layered recordings into Logic Pro

With Voice Memos turned on in iCloud settings, a layered recording from your iPhone opens on your iPad, as long as you’re signed in to the same Apple Account there, so you can export the recording to Files. From there, import it into Logic Pro for iPad for editing, and in Logic Pro 11.1.1 or later, the two layers automatically open as two distinct tracks.
