Maps

While you’re following driving, cycling, or walking directions, you can share your estimated time of arrival (ETA) to let friends and family know when you’re likely to arrive.

Your ETA updates automatically if there are major delays, so you don’t have to send follow-up messages along the way. You can share your ETA with more than one contact, and even ask Siri to share it.

Here’s how to share your estimated time of arrival in Maps on iPad.

Note: Not all features are available in all countries or regions. Some Maps features on iPad models with Wi-Fi + Cellular require a cellular data plan and Cellular Data turned on in Settings > Apps > Maps. Standard carrier data and text rates may apply. See View or change your cellular data.

Share your estimated time of arrival (ETA)

Siri: Ask Siri something like, “Share my ETA.” Learn how to use Siri.

Or without using Siri:

  1. Go to the Maps app on your iPad.
  2. Search for the place you want to go and then tap Go.
  3. Tap the route card at the bottom of the screen. Then tap Share ETA.

If you don’t see Share ETA, make sure you turned it on in Settings > Apps > Maps.

  4. Choose one or more suggested contacts, or tap Open Contacts to find a contact.
  5. To share your ETA with more contacts, tap Sharing with at the bottom of the screen. Then tap Open Contacts.

The Messages, Find My, and Contacts apps can share your location with others, too. For the steps, see our article for each app: Share your location in Messages, Share your location in Find My, or Edit contacts.

Stop sharing your ETA

  1. Start the Maps app on your iPad.
  2. Open the route card for a trip in progress.
  3. Tap Sharing with at the bottom of the screen. Then tap Stop Sharing ETA below each contact’s name.

Automatically share your ETA to a pin

A contact you add to a pinned place in your Places automatically gets your ETA when you start turn-by-turn navigation to that location.

  1. Start the Maps app on your iPad.
  2. Tap Places, then tap Pinned. See Add a pin to your Places.
  3. Tap the Information button and tap Add Person.
  4. Search for a contact, tap to add them and then tap the Done button.
  5. Tap the pinned location. Then tap Go to start sharing your ETA.

Until you arrive, your location, route, and ETA remain viewable.

Turn off ETA sharing

  1. Start the Settings app on your iPad.
  2. Tap Apps, then tap Maps.
  3. Scroll down, then turn off Share ETA.

With iPadOS 13.1, iOS 13.1, or later, people get a Maps notification with your ETA and can track your progress in Maps. Earlier versions get the notification through iMessage instead, and other mobile devices receive an SMS message.

When you disconnect your iPhone from your car’s CarPlay or Bluetooth® system and exit your vehicle, a parked car marker is dropped so you can easily find the way back to your car.

Find your parked car

  1. Open the Maps app on your iPhone.
  2. Choose Parked Car below Siri Suggestions.

If you don’t find your parked car in Maps

  • Show Parked Location is turned on in Settings > Apps > Maps.

Note: Maps doesn’t mark your car as parked when you leave it at a familiar location, such as your home or work.

Don’t show your parked location

  1. Open the Maps app on your iPhone.
  2. To remove the Parked Car marker for your car’s current location, touch and hold the marker. Tap Remove Car.
  3. To never show your parked location, open Settings, tap Apps, tap Maps, and turn off Show Parked Location.

You can use pins to mark places so you can more easily find those locations later.

You can drop a pin to share a location, or to start or end your route somewhere that isn’t already marked. Pins appear as a row of icons in your Places, and you can get a pin’s latitude and longitude, edit it, or remove it. You can also note your current location with Mark My Location, and get directions to a pin.

Drop a pin

  1. Go to the Maps app on your iPad.
  2. Touch and hold the map until a pin marker appears.

To refine the location, tap Move, then drag the map.

  3. Tap Pin. To mark several places with pins, save each pin as you drop it.

Pins appear as a row of icons in your Places when you open the Maps app.

To get directions to the pin, tap the pin, then tap the directions button.
