Family sharing

In the iTunes Store app, you can review and download music purchased by you or other family members. You can also customize content restrictions for the iTunes Store in Settings.

With Family Sharing, the organizer can approve purchases made by family members under a certain age. You see family members’ purchases only if they choose to share them, and you can view a chronological list of everything bought with your Apple Account.

Approve purchases with Family Sharing

When Family Sharing is set up, the family organizer gets to review and approve purchases by other family members under a certain age.

View and download music purchased by you or family members

  1. Open the iTunes Store app on your iPad.
  2. Tap Purchased in the tab bar at the top.
  3. If you set up Family Sharing, tap My Purchases. Then choose a family member to view their purchases.

Note: You can see purchases made by family members only if they choose to share their purchases.

  4. Find the item you want to download. Then tap the Download button.

View your entire iTunes Store purchase history

Viewing your iTunes Store purchase history brings up a chronological list of the items purchased with your Apple Account, including apps, songs, books, and more.

Your purchase history is where you can do any of the following:

  • View when an order was billed to your account.
  • View the date of a purchase.
  • Resend email receipts.
  • Report a problem with purchased content.

Set content restrictions

Your child’s access to explicit content, music videos, and music profiles in Music is something you can restrict.

When you purchase access to movies, TV shows, music, music videos, ebooks, audiobooks, or ringtones from Apple, you also have the option to permanently download these items to a compatible iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC. Apple cannot revoke your downloaded content, and you can always access your downloaded content without an internet connection.

With Family Sharing, the organizer can set up Purchase Sharing to share App Store, Apple TV, and Apple Books purchases.

To share purchases, the family organizer must turn on Purchase Sharing and add a payment method. Family members can then opt in to Purchase Sharing, so they can share purchases and view shared purchases. When a family member makes a purchase, the organizer is billed, unless that family member adds a payment method to pay for their own purchases.

When a family member buys something, it’s added to their account, and eligible purchases are shared with the rest of the family. The organizer can also turn off purchase sharing later.

Turn on Purchase Sharing

Purchase sharing means the family organizer pays for family members’ purchases, so the organizer must have a valid payment method on file. Each family member can also add their own payment methods.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPad.
  2. Tap Family, tap Purchase Sharing, and follow the onscreen instructions.

Access shared content

If you’ve opted in and purchase sharing is turned on, eligible apps and content your family members buy are yours to download and play.

Turn off Purchase Sharing

As the family organizer, you can turn off purchase sharing, and your purchases are then hidden from Family Sharing members. You’ll still see items other members have shared with you.

Note: Even though your items aren’t shared, any purchases you make still use the shared family payment method.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPad.
  2. Tap Family, then tap Purchase Sharing.
  3. Tap your name and turn off Share Purchases.
  4. If the organizer wants to turn off purchase sharing entirely, they can tap Stop Purchase Sharing.

You can also share Apple and App Store subscriptions with family members.

When you’re in a Family Sharing group, you can share Apple subscriptions and eligible App Store subscriptions with other family members. If your group has purchase sharing turned on, any subscriptions shared with the group are billed to the organizer’s default payment method.

The organizer can also require children in the group to ask for approval before eligible purchases or free downloads. You can share an App Store subscription from Manage Subscriptions. Some subscriptions, like Apple Arcade, let all members of your family download and play, and each player gets a personalized account.

Note: Not all services are available in all countries or regions, and some selections are subject to content restrictions set in Screen Time. Age restrictions for Ask to Buy vary by country or region. In the United States, the family organizer can turn on Ask to Buy for any family member under age 18; for children under age 13, it’s on by default.

Share Apple subscriptions

  1. Start the Settings app on your iPad.
  2. Tap Family, tap Subscriptions, and do one of the following:
    • Tap a subscription you want to share, then follow the onscreen instructions.
    • Tap Manage Subscriptions, then tap a subscription.

See any of the following to learn more.

  • Apple Arcade: See Subscribe to Apple Arcade. All members of your family can download and play Apple Arcade games from the App Store. Each player gets a personalized account—your progress is carried over between devices.
  • Apple Fitness+: All members of your family can access workouts in the Fitness app on their iPhone or iPad.
  • Apple Music: See Subscribe to Apple Music. With a family subscription, each family member gets their own music library and personal recommendations.
  • Apple News+: See Subscribe to Apple News+. All members of your family can read Apple News+ publications for no additional charge.
  • Apple TV: Each family member can watch on their iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, Apple TV 4K, and supported smart TVs and streaming devices, using their own Apple Account and password.
  • iCloud+: See Subscribe to iCloud+. When you share iCloud+, all family members have access to iCloud+ features and storage. For storage, you only share the space—your photos and documents stay private and everyone keeps using their own accounts.

Share App Store subscriptions

It’s up to you to choose which eligible App Store subscriptions you share with family members. To learn about the App Store, see our article, Get apps in the App Store.

  1. Start the Settings app on your iPad.
  2. Tap Family and tap Subscriptions. Then tap Manage Subscriptions.
  3. Do either of the following:

    • Share all new subscriptions: Turn on Share with Family. When you purchase a new subscription that’s eligible for sharing, it’s shared with your Family Sharing members by default.
    • Change the settings of a specific subscription: Tap a subscription and turn Share with Family on or off.

If you don’t see Share with Family, the subscription isn’t eligible for sharing.

With Family Sharing, each family member joins the family group with their own Apple Account. That way you can share access to subscriptions and other features without sharing personal information like photos or documents.

The family organizer can invite family members who have an Apple Account or create a Child Account for a child who doesn’t have one yet. You can send the invitation with AirDrop, Messages, or Mail, or invite someone in person. Children under 13 need a Child Account, which is available up to age 18. And you can belong to only one Family Sharing group at a time.

Learn about types of Family Sharing members.

Add a family member

The organizer of a Family Sharing group can add any family member who has their own Apple Account.

  1. Start the Settings app on your iPad.
  2. Tap Family and tap Add Member in the upper-right corner.
  3. Tap Invite Others, then follow the onscreen instructions.

You can send the invitation using AirDrop, Messages, or Mail. If you’re near the family member, you can also tap Invite in Person and ask the family member to enter their Apple Account email address (or phone number) and password on your device.

The people you invite find your invitation in the Family row at the top of Settings. Haven’t heard back? You can follow up with reminders.

If you’d like to join an existing Family Sharing group, the organizer has to add you. You can only belong to one Family Sharing group at a time, so leave your current group before joining a different one. For the steps, read our guide, Leave a Family Sharing group.

In a Family Sharing group, the organizer can remove members or disband the group, and family members (other than teens with parental controls or children) can remove themselves. A removed member immediately loses access to shared features, and you can’t remove a child under 13, though you can move them to another group.

If you leave a group yourself, you stop sharing your purchases and subscriptions and immediately lose access to content others shared. The organizer can’t leave the group, though, so changing the organizer means disbanding it and having another adult create a new one.

Learn about types of Family Sharing members.

Remove a member from a family group

The organizer of a Family Sharing group can remove other members, and a removed family member immediately loses access to shared subscriptions and to content purchased by other members.

  1. Open Settings and then tap Family.
  2. Tap [member’s name], then tap Remove [member’s name] from Sharing Group.

There’s no way to remove a child under 13 from your Family Sharing group, but you can still move them to another group or delete their Apple Account.

If you transfer a child under 13 from a family group, that will affect the parental controls previously set, while removing a teen under 18 means losing your previously set parental controls.

Leave a Family Sharing group

As soon as you leave a Family Sharing group, you lose access to any content family members have shared, and you stop sharing your purchases and subscriptions with them.

Note: The organizer isn’t able to leave the Family Sharing group. To change the organizer, you must disband the group, then have another adult create a new one.

  1. Open Settings and then tap Family.
  2. Tap [your name] and tap Stop Using Family Sharing.

Stop Family Sharing

If the family organizer turns off Family Sharing, every family member is removed from the group at the same time. With Family Sharing off, they all immediately lose access to the shared content and subscriptions.

Note: If a child under 13 is in the Family Sharing group, the organizer must move them to another group or delete their Apple Account before disbanding the group. Transferring a child under 13 from a family group will affect the parental controls previously set, and removing a teen under 18 will remove your previously set parental controls.

  1. Open Settings and then tap Family.
  2. Tap [your name] and tap Stop Using Family Sharing.

With Family Sharing, you and up to five other family members can share access to Apple services, eligible purchases, iCloud+ storage, and more. You can even help locate each other’s missing devices.

One adult—the organizer—invites the others, and each family member chooses the features they want to use. When they join, Family Sharing is set up on everyone’s devices automatically. Setting it up on one device is enough, since it’s then available on all your devices signed in to the same Apple Account. A Child Account is required for children under 13.

With Family Sharing, you can share your location with members of your Family Sharing group and help them find lost devices.

When the family organizer sets up location sharing, the organizer’s location is automatically shared with everyone in the family, including new members added later. Each family member decides whether to share their location, and you can stop sharing with anyone at any time. You can even get notified if a child leaves school during school hours. You can also ask a family member to share an AirTag with you.

Share your location with family members

When you share locations with your family, they’re able to see your location in Find My. If a child leaves school during school hours, for example, you can get notifications when family members’ locations change.

  1. Open Settings, tap Family, and then tap Location Sharing.
  2. Turn on Location Sharing for the family member you want to share your location with.

You can repeat this step for each family member you want to share your location with. Each family member receives a message that you’re sharing your location and can choose to share their location with you.

You can stop sharing your location with any family member at any time.

  3. If you want to share your location with new members that join later, turn on Automatically Share Location.

When Automatically Share Location is turned on for a child, only parents and guardians in the family group can see the child’s location, including parents and guardians that are added to the group later.

Note: Children and teens with Screen Time turned on may not be able to change their own location sharing settings.

To share your location, you must have Location Services turned on in Settings > Privacy & Security. See Control the location information you share.

Locate a family member’s device

Members of your Family Sharing group can help locate a missing device added to the Find My app after you share your location with them.

For the steps, see our article, Locate a device in Find My.

The list puts your devices at the top and your family members’ devices below them.

Ask a family member to share an AirTag with you

When the Find My app notifies you with AirTag Detected Near You or Unknown AirTag, the family member who owns the AirTag can share it with you if you ask.

  1. In the notification, tap Ask Owner to Share AirTag.
  2. Tap Ask Owner at the bottom of the screen.

Find Devices on iCloud.com can also locate a family member’s missing device.

Your Apple Watch is backed up automatically to your paired iPhone, and you can restore it from a stored backup. Apple Watch backups are included when you back up your iPhone—either to iCloud, or to your Mac or Windows device.

If your backups are stored in iCloud, you can’t view the information in them. But if you get a new Apple Watch, you can restore it from one of those backups.

Back up and restore Apple Watch

  • Back up your Apple Watch: When paired with an iPhone, Apple Watch content is backed up continuously to the iPhone. If you unpair the devices, a backup is performed first.
  • Restore your Apple Watch from a backup: If you pair your Apple Watch with the same iPhone again, or get a new Apple Watch, you can choose Restore from Backup and select a stored backup on your iPhone.

An Apple Watch that’s managed for a family member backs up directly to the family member’s iCloud account when the watch is connected to power and a Wi-Fi network. To disable iCloud backups for that watch, go to the Settings app on the managed Apple Watch, tap [account name], tap iCloud, tap iCloud Backups, then turn off iCloud Backups.

On watchOS 27, your child or family member must be part of your Family Sharing group and have a cellular-capable Apple Watch SE 3 or Apple Watch Series 9 or later. Their watch doesn’t have to use the same cellular carrier as the iPhone you manage it with, but the iPhone you use to pair and set up the watch must be within normal Bluetooth range (about 33 feet or 10 meters) of it to manage settings and update the software.
