iPhone

The iPhone is a smartphone from Apple that runs the iOS mobile operating system. Between its apps, communication features, the camera, mobile internet access, and other functionalities, the iPhone has quickly become an integral part of many peoples tech lives.

In the Mail app, you can read emails yourself or have Apple Intelligence summarize them for you. You can also add contacts and preview an email’s contents without opening it.

If you don’t have time for a primary message right away, Remind Me brings it back to the top of the list at a time and date you choose. You can also quickly mark multiple emails as read, right from the message list.

Quick tip: Apple Intelligence might suggest actions you can take when you check your email, like adding a reminder or creating a calendar event.

Click the suggestion to accept it.

Note: Suggested actions in Mail on iOS 27 or later is an Apple Intelligence feature available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later in supported regions when device language is set to English.*

Read an email

  1. Open the Mail app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the message you want to read.

  3. Tap the Mark button at the bottom of the message list and then choose Mark as Read.

Note: The number of unread messages shown on your Home Screen reflects the number of unread messages in your Primary category.

To show your total number of unread messages in all categories, go to Settings > Notifications > Mail > Customize Notifications, then turn on All Unread Messages.

Preview a Primary message and a list of options

To see what a Primary message is about without opening it completely, preview it.

  1. Open Settings, tap Apps, tap Mail, tap Preview (below Message List), and choose up to five lines.

Show the whole conversation

You can use iPhone Mirroring to control your iPhone from your nearby Mac. When iPhone Mirroring is turned on, you can also receive iPhone notifications on your Mac and keep track of Live Activities, so you don’t miss a thing.

Your iPhone needs iOS 18 or later and your Mac needs macOS 15 or later, and the two have to be signed in to the same Apple Account and within 30 feet (10 meters) of each other.

Here’s how to control your iPhone from your Mac.

Note: iPhone Mirroring isn’t compatible with some iPhone features, such as the camera and microphone. And while you’re using iPhone Mirroring, some Continuity features like Continuity Camera and AirPlay won’t be available on your Mac.

Before you begin

Before you start, check that all of these are true:

  • Both devices have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® turned on.
  • You’re signed in to the same Apple Account on both devices.
  • Your devices are within 30 feet (10 meters) of each other.
  • Your iPhone has iOS 18 or later and your Mac has macOS 15 or later.
  • Both devices meet minimum system requirements for iPhone Mirroring.

If you’re using a VPN, check that its configuration doesn’t prevent local networking, which may interfere with some Continuity features.

You can only use iPhone Mirroring if it’s available in your country or region, and iPhone Mirroring isn’t currently available in the European Union.

In a country or region where iPhone Mirroring isn’t available, iPhone Mirroring tells you that’s the reason it’s unable to connect to your iPhone.

Set up iPhone Mirroring on your Mac

  1. Make sure your iPhone is turned on and nearby, with the screen locked.

Note: Your iPhone must be nearby to use iPhone Mirroring.

  2. Go to the iPhone Mirroring app on your Mac.
  3. Click Connect.
  4. Enter your iPhone passcode. Then choose one of the following:

    • Ask Every Time: Receive a prompt for Touch ID, Face ID, or your device passcode each time you use iPhone Mirroring.
    • Authenticate Automatically: Automatically connect to iPhone Mirroring without needing to authenticate.

Note: If you see an alert on your iPhone that says Trust This Computer? tap Trust. You may be asked to enter your device passcode to proceed. If you see an alert on your Mac that says “Allow accessory to connect?” click Allow.

  5. Choose whether or not to Allow Notifications from iPhone.

Choose which iPhone to use with iPhone Mirroring

Though you can set up more than one iPhone for iPhone Mirroring on your Mac, you can connect to only one iPhone at a time.

  1. Go to the iPhone Mirroring app on your Mac.
  2. Click iPhone Mirroring Settings and click Change iPhone.
  3. Under Widgets, click the iPhone pop-up menu and choose your iPhone.

You can also open the System Settings app on your Mac and click Desktop & Dock in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down). Under Widgets, choose your iPhone from the iPhone pop-up menu.

Use iPhone Mirroring on your Mac

  1. Make sure your iPhone is turned on and nearby, with the screen locked.
  2. Go to the iPhone Mirroring app on your Mac.
  3. Click Continue.
  4. Do any of the following:

    • Click to tap: Click your Mac computer’s mouse or trackpad to tap. You can also swipe and scroll in the iPhone Mirroring app, and use your keyboard to type.
    • Reposition the window: Move the pointer to the top of the window and drag the window by the title bar that appears.
    • Drag to resize the window: Hold the pointer near the edge of the iPhone Mirroring window until it becomes a double arrow and drag the window to the size you want. When you’re using a resizable app, like Weather or Photos, the amount of content that appears changes as you resize. When you’re using the Home Screen, App Switcher, or an app that isn’t resizable, the content scales larger or smaller as you resize. If you resize an app, it reopens at that size the next time you use it in iPhone Mirroring; to return it to its original size, choose View > iPhone Size.

Note: Window resizing in iPhone Mirroring requires iOS 27 or later, and isn’t supported on iPhone 11, 12, or 13 (any model) or iPhone SE (2nd or 3rd generation). On unsupported models, the resize cursor scales the window instead of resizing it.

    • Choose a window size: Choose View in the iPhone Mirroring menu bar. Choose an option. iPhone Size returns the window to its original iPhone size. Actual Size shows the original content without any scaling applied. Zoom In shows the same content scaled larger, and Zoom Out shows the same content scaled smaller.
    • Open the App Switcher: Move your pointer to the top of the iPhone Mirroring app until the title bar appears. Then click the App Switcher button to open the App Switcher. The window returns to iPhone size.
    • Go to the Home Screen: If you’re in an app and want to return to the Home Screen, move your pointer to the top of the iPhone Mirroring app until the title bar appears and click the Home Screen button. The window returns to iPhone size.
    • Rearrange your Home Screen and perform quick actions: On the Home Screen, Control-click any app, then click Edit Home Screen. You can also Control-click an app and choose to turn some apps into widgets or to perform quick actions, like creating a new note in Notes or sending your location in Maps.

An iPhone widget you open on your Mac opens in the iPhone Mirroring app.

Get iPhone notifications on your Mac

While setting up iPhone Mirroring, you can also turn on iPhone notifications. On your Mac, iPhone notifications appear with an iPhone badge, which tells you they came from your iPhone.

Note: Your iPhone must be turned on for its notifications to appear on your Mac, but it doesn’t have to be nearby.

If you didn’t choose to turn on iPhone notifications while setting up iPhone Mirroring, you can still do it. To switch them on, or to choose the apps that send notifications to your Mac, do either of the following:

  • On your iPhone: Go to Settings > Notifications, choose any app, then turn “Show on Mac” on or off.
  • On your Mac: Choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Notifications in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down), then click “Allow notifications from iPhone.” Under Mirror iPhone Notifications From, turn the option on or off for any app.

View Live Activities from iPhone on your Mac

Setting up iPhone Mirroring also puts Live Activities from your iPhone in the menu bar on your Mac.

  1. On your Mac, click the Live Activity in the menu bar to view more information.
  2. Do any of the following:
    • Click the Live Activity again to open the relevant app in the iPhone Mirroring app on your Mac.
    • Click outside of the Live Activity to close it, but continue to see it in the menu bar.
    • Move the pointer over the Live Activity, then click the Close button to close the Live Activity and remove it from the menu bar.

Transfer files using iPhone Mirroring

You can transfer files, photos, videos, and more between your Mac and iPhone in supported apps using iPhone Mirroring. To transfer a file, simply drag and drop it from your Mac to the iPhone Mirroring app window, or vice versa.

Turn off iPhone Mirroring

  1. On your iPhone, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General and tap AirPlay & Continuity. Then tap iPhone Mirroring.
  3. Tap AirPlay & Continuity, then tap iPhone Mirroring.
  4. Tap Edit in the top right and then select a Mac to remove.

If iPhone Mirroring isn’t working

  • Make sure that you’re signed in to the same Apple Account on both devices.
  • Make sure that your iPhone and Mac have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff turned on.
  • Your devices must be within 30 feet (10 meters) of one another.
  • If you have more than one iPhone set up for iPhone Mirroring, you can choose which iPhone you want to use. On your Mac, go to iPhone Mirroring Settings, click Change iPhone, then choose your iPhone.

If you move the Bluetooth accessory out of range, the playback destination returns to your iPhone.

Improve the audio accuracy of third-party Bluetooth accessories and devices

Specifying the Bluetooth device type on your iPhone, such as headphone, speaker, or car stereo, can improve the sound of third-party Bluetooth devices.

  1. Open Settings and tap Bluetooth. Then tap the Actions Available button next to the name of the accessory or device.
  2. Tap Device Type and choose the type of device.

In the Podcasts app, you can organize the podcasts you follow, catch up on the latest episodes, and create your own stations.

Your library is where it happens. You can change the episode playback order, set download limits for each podcast, mark an episode as played or unplayed, and hide episodes you already played. Your library also shows the shows you follow and the channels you subscribe to.

Here’s how to organize your podcast library on iPhone.

View your podcast library

  1. Start the Podcasts app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Library to see the following options:
    • Shows: Tap Followed to view shows you follow. If you downloaded or saved episodes from podcasts you don’t follow, tap All to see them. You can tap any show to see its information or the episodes you downloaded or saved.
    • Channels: See channels you subscribe to, channels you added to your favorites, and channels that have shows you follow. You can tap a channel to browse all of its shows.
    • Categories: See categories you added to your favorites, along with categories for any shows you follow.
    • Saved: See episodes you saved.
    • Downloaded: See episodes you downloaded. You can watch or listen to these episodes without an internet connection.
    • Latest Episodes: See the most recent episodes from each show you follow. To change how long episodes stay in this playlist, tap the More button.
    • Stations: If you created stations, each one is listed.

Change the episode playback order

  1. Start the Podcasts app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Library, then tap Shows.
  3. Touch and hold a show, then tap Settings.
  4. Choose an option under Episode Order.

Play an episode from the show page, and the remaining episodes play in the order you’ve chosen.

    • Mark all episodes listed while viewing a show you follow: Tap the More button. Tap Mark All as Played, Mark Filtered as Played, Mark All as Unplayed, or Mark Filtered as Unplayed.

Hide episodes you already played

To hide episodes you’ve already played, change a show’s settings.

  1. Start the Podcasts app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Library, tap Shows, and touch and hold a show.
  3. Tap Settings and turn on Hide Played Episodes.

To automatically hide played episodes for all shows you follow, go to Settings > Apps > Podcasts, then turn on Hide Played Episodes.

Create your own station

Stations, similar to a music playlist, group shows you follow based on themes like morning commute, comedy, or news. Your station automatically gets new episodes from the podcasts you choose on a regular basis.

  1. Start the Podcasts app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Library and then tap the More button.
  3. Tap New Station, then add a title.
  4. Tap Choose Shows. Then tap the shows you want to add to the station (or turn on Include All Shows).

Quick tip: You decide how many episodes from each podcast get added to your station. Tap the station and tap the More button, then tap Station Settings. From there, tap Episodes and choose an option to use the same settings for all podcasts in the station, or tap a show in the list and choose an option to adjust only that one.

In the Contacts app, you can add multiple accounts, such as iCloud, Microsoft Exchange, Google, and Yahoo. You can choose a default account, set up LDAP or CardDAV accounts, show or hide accounts, and delete accounts.

You can also let third-party apps add contacts to the Contacts app. Those contacts are managed by the app, though, so you can’t edit them in Contacts.

Here’s how to add or remove accounts in Contacts on iPhone.

Add your iCloud contacts

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap [your name], then tap iCloud.
  3. Tap See All next to Saved to iCloud and turn on Contacts.

Add your contacts from other accounts

The Contacts app can manage your contacts in other accounts, too, such as Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft Exchange.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Apps, then tap Contacts.
  3. Tap Contacts Accounts and tap Add Account.
  4. Choose an account, sign in to it, then turn on Contacts.

Note: Some accounts don’t support Push notifications. If you add one, you can still update your contacts from it on a Fetch schedule. Go to Settings > Apps > Contacts, tap Contacts Accounts, and then tap Fetch New Data. Choose a schedule under Fetch, and if you choose Automatically, your iPhone downloads new data whenever it’s charging and connected to Wi-Fi.

Add contacts from contacts provider apps

Third-party apps can add contacts to the Contacts app if you allow it. Because the third-party app manages them, those contacts can’t be edited in Contacts.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Apps, then tap Contacts.
  3. Tap Providers, then turn on the option for an app.

Choose your default account

If you select a default account, new contacts are automatically added to it.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Apps, then tap Contacts.
  3. Tap Default Account and tap the account you want to make your default.

Set up an LDAP or CardDAV account to access business or school directories

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Apps, then tap Contacts.
  3. Tap Contacts Accounts and tap Add Account.
  4. Tap Add Other Account and then tap Add LDAP Account or CardDAV Account.
  5. Enter the account information.

Remove a contact account

Once you remove an account, its contacts no longer appear on your iPhone. They remain in your internet account, like iCloud.com or Google, and on any other devices you had already set up.

  • Turn off iCloud contacts: Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud. Tap See All next to Saved to iCloud, then turn off Contacts.

You can choose to keep or delete the previously synced iCloud contacts on your iPhone.

  • Temporarily stop using an account: Go to Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts, tap the account, then turn off Contacts.

To view the contacts in that account on your iPhone again, turn on Contacts.

  • Delete an account: Go to Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts, tap the account, then tap Delete Account.

Don’t see Sign Out or Delete Account? Your organization may manage your account, so see an administrator for removal instructions.

A certificate, also known as a “digital certificate” or a “public key certificate,” is a file that helps keep web communications secure. It’s issued by a trusted organization. Safari relies on certificates whenever you visit an encrypted website, for example, to do online banking, so your connection stays secure.

Certificates are issued by trusted organizations, such as VeriSign, Inc. or RSA Security, Inc. When you visit an encrypted website—for example, to do online banking—Safari checks if the site’s certificate is legitimate. If it’s not, Safari warns you.

An encrypted website and Safari work together to encrypt information you exchange with the site. The key used for the encryption is contained in the site’s security certificate. This protects your sign-in information, credit card numbers, addresses, and other secure data.

If you need to connect to a website that requires a personal certificate, you’re provided with a certificate and instructions for installing it. After it’s installed, you gain authenticated access to the website automatically. If you’re unable to access it, contact the website administrator.

Important: If a website doesn’t use the HTTPS protocol, have a digital identity certificate, or encrypt information, the words “Not Secure” appear in the search field. Don’t enter personal or financial information on a website that isn’t encrypted. The website you’re visiting might not be the website you want, and information you enter is vulnerable to theft. Instead, go back to the webpage where you signed in and check for a link to another version of the site that’s encrypted—for example, “Use our secure site.” If available, use it, even if you don’t expect to view or provide private information.

Although encryption ensures that your connection to a website is secure, it doesn’t guarantee the website is trustworthy. Some fraudulent websites masquerade as trusted ones by changing one or two letters of the address, so always check the address in the Safari toolbar to confirm it’s correct.
