Using a Mac VPN? Upgrade to Big Sur 11.2 Fast

The inclusion of a single feature has had the security community and public beta users in an uproar over Apple’s security practices. Before we get into the main topic, here’s a quick summary of the changes in Big Sur 11.2.

What’s New in Big Sur 11.2?

Not many exciting new changes this update (aside from improved Bluetooth functionality), but the patch addresses the following issues:

  • External monitors now function properly on Mac mini M1 when connected through an HDMI to DVI adapter
  • Apple ProRAW photo edits would sometimes not save – this has been remedied
  • iCloud Drive no longer switches off when the iCloud Drive Desktop & Documents Folders option is disabled
  • System Preferences now properly unlock after inputting your admin password
  • Pressing the Globe key now correctly displays the Emoji & Symbols pane

Of course, the biggest change wasn’t mentioned in Apple’s patch notes – the removal of the ContentFilterExclusionList component found in the second beta version of Big Sur 11.2. Then again, ZDNet reports that Apple didn’t intend to include the feature in the final version. It was simply meant to help engineers fix some bugs before the final release.

What’s the Deal with VPNs on Big Sur 11.2?

Simply put, the ContentFilterExclusionList feature (as its name implies) excluded Apple applications from security scans and similar behaviors. Using a VPN? iCloud and similar apps would no longer have their traffic routed through the VPN tunnel. This could lead to harmful data leaks, especially on public Wi-Fi where hackers may continuously eavesdrop on your connection. Even firewalls weren’t safe – apps included on the list could easily bypass user-created security filters.
This also affected anti-malware software. Security experts were worried that cyber criminals would create malicious code that attaches itself to first-party apps. Since they could no longer be scanned for viruses, you’d never become aware of any malware infections on your Mac.
Yes, malware is much rarer on Apple devices, but not unheard of. Just this January Apple quietly announced that iOS devices were actively exploited by hackers through several security exploits.

Which Providers Were Affected by the Issue?

Fortunately, a lot of top Mac VPN providers were not impacted by the inclusion of the component. The only VPN clients affected were ones that used the NEFilterDataProvider and NEAppProxyProvider extensions. Providers such as CyberGhost VPN and Surfshark were among those that needed to investigate the issue further, and make changes to their clients as needed.
NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Private Internet Access, and other VPNs do not use the macOS Network Extension APIs. As such, network traffic from first-party apps was correctly routed through their VPN tunnel.
Seeing as Apple has removed the exclusion list entirely, it’s now completely safe to use a VPN on Big Sur 11.2 and beyond. Naturally, you need to be careful of your VPN choice if you want to remain completely secure. Here’s the main thing you should look out for.

Free Mac VPNs – Are They a Good Idea?

Not exactly. While the price tag may seem tempting, you could end up paying way more than a simple subscription in damages. At least that’s the situation over 20 million free VPN users found themselves in, when seven Hong Kong providers leaked the following data online:

  • User browsing histories and location data
  • IP and home addresses
  • Passwords in plain-text format
  • Emails and payment info

This isn’t just an isolated incident either. According to a group of researchers, many free VPNs on the App Store are in violation of Apple’s Review guidelines. If that wasn’t enough, the same research reveals that nearly 60% of the most downloaded free Mac VPNs are owned by Chinese firms or private individuals. China is known for its heavily anti-VPN stance, so any data collected by such VPNs could very easily end up in the hands of the Chinese government.
Otherwise, your private browsing activity and location data could simply be sold off to advertising networks. And yes, it’s completely legal for free VPNs to do so as long as their privacy policy discloses their data-sharing practices.
Of course, not even reading VPN terms of service all day will guarantee that your data stays safe. How so? Well, remember the Hong Kong VPNs we mentioned earlier? All of their privacy policies claimed they didn’t store any user-related information.
Many “free” apps collect way more data about you than is needed for proper functionality, in direct contrast to what VPNs are supposed to accomplish. That is, to safeguard your private information from hackers and greedy ISPs trying to sell your data.

iPhone 12 Pro Max Touchscreen Not Working

Problem: Your iPhone’s 12 Pro Max screen has stopped responding, or it has frozen and is stuck on a black screen.

Possible solution:

The first thing you should do is try a force restart. We’ve detailed how to do that above If that doesn’t work, try charging the iPhone for up to an hour. If you still don’t see the charging screen, or you see the connect to power screen, try cleaning out charging point and headphone jack, check the USB cable and the wall plug.

Apple is famously finicky with its warranties, so if they won’t fix it, try an authorised Apple reseller. Problem: Your iPhone 12 Pro Max won’t backup its data to the iCloud

Possible solution:

The first thing to do is check whether your iCloud storage limit is full. If it is, you might have to stop backing up or delete some data – photos typically take up a lot of room, and there might be some you don’t need, otherwise, games tend to backup data, as does the Mail app.

We have had this affordable entry-level model on our wrist every day since its release, and in this article we take stock. Is the smaller price tag justified, or is it better to save up and get the Series 6? We answer that question in this second impression of the Apple Watch SE.

No lack of functions

In our initial Apple Watch SE review (after one week of testing) we write that entry-level model “has it all”. We still stand behind those words, but a nuance is in order. The SE is especially recommended for people who are now walking around with a somewhat older Watch. In our opinion, people with newer models have little reason to switch.

Compared to previous models (Series 3 and older), the Apple Watch SE has everything you would expect from a modern smartwatch. For example, the heart rate monitor works great, the watch uses Activity rings to map out how active you are and the waterproof housing is ideal for a rainy country like the Netherlands. Wearing the Watch in the shower is also no problem.

Furthermore, thanks to watchOS 7, the major Apple Watch software update of 2020, the watch has a sleep tracker. This keeps track of how (in) effective your night’s sleep is and gives tips to improve the quality. In addition, the watch is quick to use thanks to the S5 chip, which is also in the Apple Watch Series 5 , and paying with Apple Pay is a snap.

Negatives

However, the entry-level watch is not perfect. This is because an important screen function is missing. The Apple Watch SE does not have an always-on display, which means that you cannot directly read the time and notifications from the screen. To do this, you must first tap the screen or lift your wrist. How (not) annoying you find this is probably very personal. In any case, it bothers us quite a bit.

Another disadvantage is the battery life. The watch lasts about a day on a full battery. After this you have to charge the Watch and that is easier said than done. To make full use of the sleep functions in watchOS 7 , you also have to wear it on your wrist at night. This is annoying, because many people want to use the night hours to charge electronics.

Now you have to provide the watch with power during the day and that is not convenient. It takes about two hours to get the battery of the Apple Watch SE completely full. In practice, it therefore means that we put the watch on the charger several times a day and recharge it a bit, instead of going to 100 percent in one go.

Differences from Series 6

There are three major differences between the Apple Watch Series 6 and Watch SE. The former has a pulse oximeter to measure the oxygen level in your blood, a sensor to make heart films and an always-on display. How much value you attach to these functions is very personal.

The fact remains that these extras come with a price tag. The Apple Watch Series 6 has a suggested retail price of 429 euros, although you can now also get it for less. The Watch SE is more than 100 euros cheaper and starts at 299 euros. Here too, you can buy the watch for less at some stores.

Let me get straight to the point: as someone who has had the latest model on their wrist every year since the first Apple Watch, the Watch Series 6 felt the least as a big step forward.

The Series 4 introduced a new design with a larger screen two years ago, the Series 5 had the always-on display that came in handy, but with Series 6 the noticeable improvements are more difficult to find.

The biggest innovation of the latest Watch is the pulse oximeter and accompanying Saturation app. This measures the blood oxygen content: the closer to 100 percent, the better. This says something about your overall health and could even give an indication of whether you have or will soon be affected by the flu.

Saturation app is too clumsy to use

The biggest drawback of the app is its sensitivity. During the day, the Watch does its best to independently take saturation measurements, so that you do not have to consciously think about it, but can still check what the percentages are. The disadvantage is that the app gives so many error messages that measurements almost only work if you take them manually.

You have to keep your wrist still so long that this makes automatic measurements almost impossible. And even then, the question is whether the measurement is correct. Every time I take several measurements in close succession, a different result comes out. The major innovation of the Series 6 is therefore mainly a nice extra (if the app does what it promises), but nothing more than that.

Fortunately, the Series 6 is much more than a way to visualize your blood oxygen level. Apple is fortunate that the functions we already know from older Watch models are still very useful today. For example, the always on display that the Series 5 introduced is nice to be able to read the time without activating the screen. There are also enough sensors for the average athlete to be able to use it.

Add to this that in addition to the hardware, the software of the Watch is also getting better every year. WatchOS 7 introduced the long-awaited Sleep app at the end of last year, with which you can map your sleep rhythm in an accessible way.

Personal wish list complete

With that, Apple filled the last box on my personal wish list for the Watch and the software is now surprisingly complete. Over the years, the Watch has become the ultimate health gadget that you can carry with you every day, providing a detailed report on your overall health and fitness.

You may already feel it coming: everything I mentioned above I can also do with an older Apple Watch or Apple Watch SE , the cheaper version that appeared at the same time as the Series 6. Months later, the added value of this more expensive version has not yet been proven. Unless you find an always on screen or the Saturation app very important, I would recommend everyone to get a SE instead of a Series 6.

Comparing VoiceOver and NVDA

Introduction

The modern era has brought many advantages for those who are blind or visually impaired. One of the most important tools a blind user uses with modern computing devices is a screen reader. Traditionally, screen readers have been very expensive third-party programs that were very difficult to obtain depending on one’s financial status. However, several free yet capable screen readers have emerged in the last 20 years. The two that we will be discussing are Apple’s VoiceOver for macOS and the Nonvisual Desktop Access or NVDA for Windows. Both are powerful screen readers in their own right, but they have their strengths and weaknesses which I will discuss in more detail. Hopefully by the end of this article, you will have a better understanding of each product and its individual strengths/weaknesses.

NVDA

Nonvisual Desktop Access or NVDA for short is a free and open source screen reader for the Microsoft Windows operating system. The organization behind the project is an Australian company called NV Access (www.nvaccess.org). It has been around since 2006 and primarily competes with the JAWS for Windows screen reader produced by Freedom Scientific or Vispero as they are now known by. It offers many of the same features that JAWS offers and should be suitable for 99% of screen reader users. The philosophy behind NVDA is extremely compelling. It is offered free of charge to anyone in the world, meaning there is no longer a financial barrier for blind people to work, learn, or do anything else on a computer. NV Access does rely on donations, either from individuals or grants from large companies, so if you can donate, it is very much worth it to help this amazing project continue long into the future. The obvious benefit is that a blind person can compete on a level playing field with sighted peers at no more cost than anyone else. Updates to NVDA are also free, and NV Access releases 3-4 updates per year that fix bugs and add new features.

Since NVDA is open source, anyone is free to review the source code and propose changes. While anyone can propose a change and submit code, it’s still reviewed and approved by NV Access before it is included in anything anyone can download. This ensures the security of the software from unauthorised changes and means that the final product available from https://www.nvaccess.org/ is just as secure and well vetted as the closed source from another company. Thousands of people from all over the world constantly contribute to the project which benefits everyone in the end. NVDA is a screen reader made for the blind by the blind. NV Access is overseen by a board of directors (of whom at least 33% must be blind or vision impaired, according to their constitution.

VoiceOver

VoiceOver is Apple’s built-in and the only screen reader for the Mac. It has been around since 2005, although the last significant update was in 2011 with Mac OS X Lion. VoiceOver works well with Apple’s built-in apps and used to be very reliable. Since it is built into the system, anyone can walk up to a Mac running a modern version of macOS and get it talking by pressing Command+F5. Apple should be commended for building a very capable screen reader into the system and showing the rest of the world that it is possible to build very robust accessibility features into mainstream products.

As previously mentioned, however, VoiceOver is not as reliable as it could or should be. Apple has not made significant changes in nearly a decade, and bugs are rarely if ever fixed. Issues have piled up over the years and the experience, while still good, is far from satisfactory depending on the tasks you wish to do. The latest trend appears to be introducing bugs that make certain things unusable. For example, there is a bug in macOS Big Sur where VoiceOver crashes when opening the Disk Utility application in macOS Recovery. This is absolutely unacceptable and would be fixed promptly if it was impacting sighted users, yet someone somewhere decided it was okay to release with this broken feature for blind users. This goes against Apple’s commitment to accessibility and the high standard of quality many would associate with the company.

Because VoiceOver is part of the system, you must wait for Apple to update the system to see if anything has been added or fixed. Since Apple’s operating systems are not open source, this means Apple is the only one that can maintain the screen reader. The fact they are not is very sad, as VoiceOver has the potential to do many great things if the appropriate resources were dedicated to it. Perhaps the reason for this neglect is the extreme popularity of Apple’s mobile iOS devices, as VoiceOver on that platform is constantly refined. We may never know, as Apple is very tight-lipped and secretive when it comes to their future developments. Unlike the open communication and collaboration model with NV Access, Apple does not communicate with the disability community. Again, this is most likely due to the secretive nature of the company, but things would probably be much better if Apple employees were willing and/or able to speak openly about accessibility with the users they serve.

Conclusion

I have done my best to outline the major differences between NVDA on Windows and VoiceOver on the Mac. While both products are good, I personally lean in favor of NVDA. Microsoft Windows is by far the most popular system in the world, and NVDA is a great tool in the toolbox. Its open source nature is a major plus and means the innovation and ability to keep up with the ever increasing changes in Windows is almost certain. In contrast, Apple’s neglect has turned me personally away from the Mac. I do not recommend people invest in Macs anymore either, as it has been clear for many years that Apple’s focus is on iOS. While it’s sad these events have transpired, we must never forget or disrespect the work Apple has done. Apple is a pioneer in the realm of mainstream accessibility, and now everyone else including Microsoft is trying to catch up. This is a very good thing as it pushes the entire industry forward and ultimately means access for blind users is only getting better and better as the years march on.
